Harry Holmes Harrison passed away Monday evening, August 5th, 2013. He was born on February 4th, 1917 just two months before the U.S. entered World War I. The 3rd youngest of 10 brothers and sisters, Harry grew up on a cotton farm in Yorkville, TN. In 1940 he met and married the love of his life, Mary Helen Halford. Together they had 4 children starting in 1942. A perforated eardrum kept him out of World War II, so Harry supported the war effort working for the Tennessee Valley Authority from 1942-1944 and then at Republic Steel in Canton, OH from 1944 until his retirement in 1980. Harry and Mary Helen returned to Tennessee by way of Dyer in 1983 and remained there until 2003 when they moved to Texas to live with their eldest son and his family.
Harry survived The Great Depression, saw the invention of the television, the jet plane, rockets to the moon, the microwave, the cell phone, and countless other wonders we all take for granted. He was a fan of football, and got to see his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes win the National Championship 7 times. He was an avid golfer and before age retired him from the game, he scored not one, but two genuine Holes-In-One. He is survived and greatly missed by his wife of 73 years, 2 sons, 2 daughters, 6 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 3 communities that were all better for having Harry in their lives.
Funeral services will be held in Dyer, TN in care of Karnes & Son Funeral Home. Visitation will be Friday, August 9, 2013 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM at the funeral home. Funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10:00AM in the Karnes & Son Funeral Home Chapel. Harry will be laid to rest in the Rutherford Cemetery following the service.
Karnes & Son is honored to serve the family of Mr. Harry Holmes Harrison.
