Interment will follow in the Mt. Olive Cemetery. Dorothy passed away Tuesday morning, December 2, 2014, at her home in Lexington. She was born October 18, 1931, to the late James David and Bettie Lee Smith King. Dorothy and Raymond were married almost 68 years ago on January 4, 1947, in Corinth, MS. At ages 15 and 19, they moved from Dyer to Chicago to start their new married life, and daughter Karyl was born eleven months later. Dorothy taught herself typing and other office skills and eventually became office manager at a large company. After 30 years, Dorothy and Raymond decided to build their retirement home on Pine Lake in Lexington, TN. where they have lived since 1987. Dorothy had many interests and hobbies. In years past she and Karyl took swim lessons and then scuba diving lessons together. She loved taking pictures and even had an underwater camera. Dorothy loved collecting beautiful things. She collected bottles and glassware. She raised prized African violets, orchids, and roses. Dorothy made and gave away beautiful jewelry. She loved cooking and having big family dinners. Most of all she loved traveling and going on family vacations. She was always ready to go somewhere new. In later years, her passion turned to working on family genealogy, and she and Raymond loved traveling to check out leads on family ancestors. Dorothy is survived by her husband of 67 years, Raymond Lyndell Powell of Lexington; one daughter; Karyl (Phil) Fisher of Lexington; three grandchildren, Jennifer (Lee) Lewis of Wildersville; Amanda (Flynn) Jowers of Obion; and Michael (Alaina) Fisher of Nashville; and one great-grandson, Broox Lewis. Dorothy was very proud of her grandchildren and what they have accomplished, and she adored her great-grandson Broox, who always made her smile. Dorothy was preceded in death by her mother, Bettie Lee Smith King Reed O’Dell; a half-brother, Bobbie Lee Reed; and great-grandson Carter Lewis. The family will receive friends on Friday, from 10 a.m. – 1: p.m. at Karnes & Son Funeral Home in Dyer.
